The Ooty Toy Train starts its journey in Mettupalayam ,a bustling traffic gridlocked town,and climbs up through the Nilgiri Mountains,hauled by an ancient steam engine a throwback from the british presence in India.It is quite a journey,climbing steep inclines,with the safety of a rack and pinion passing over rickety old bridges,waterfalls and tea plantations,stopping now and then to replenish the engines water,giving everybody onboard time to stretch their legs.

The Railway was built by the British Raj for a summer retreat high into the mountains to the town of Ooty to escape the oppressive heat on the plains below,and today the journey is just as pleasant

The Steam train goes as far as Conoor,where it is switched for a more modern diesel loco for the rest of the journey to the town of Ooty
